The Public Lands BreakAway is an opportunity for students to explore some of the more isolated public land areas in the American west.  Through this exploration, and course content, students will better understand the environmental, economic, and political landscapes associated with several National Parks and Monuments in Utah.
This BreakAway is designed to combine the disciplines of Economics, Political Science, History and Environmental Studies through the study of U.S. national parks.  The national parks known as Capital Reef, Bears Ears, and Canyon Lands, located in Utah, USA, are connected through geographic proximity and the unique geology of the region. An abundance of sandstone arches and fins have created what is described as a “red rock wonderland.” The area presents an interesting opportunity for interdisciplinary study.  From an economic perspective, this area offers a somewhat unique opportunity to study in recreational tourism. It is widely believed to be one of the finest mountain biking areas in the world. The area also draws large numbers of hikers, photographers, rock climbers, canyoneers, horseback riders, and white water rafters.
