The Money and Beauty Breakaway has been designed around an exhibit by the same name created by
the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation. This exhibition took the visitor not only on a journey to the roots of
Florentine power in Europe, but it also explored the economic mechanisms which allowed the
Florentines to dominate the world of trade and business. Florence was not only the cradle of Western
culture, it was also the birthplace of the modern financial system. Here in the various city states
protected by the Tuscan hills, innovative merchants began to experiment with the techniques of wealth
creation that have come to shape the modern world. The great Tuscan banking families the Bardi, the
Peruzzi, and of course later, the Medici, created lasting monuments to their financial ingenuity, not only
by amassing vast fortunes, but by translating those fortunes into the works of art that have become a
part of the world's cultural heritage. It is also important to consider the Church’s wider economic and
political importance. Once the Medici established banking ties with the Papacy, cities’ survival depended
on its relation to the Papal States. Utilizing the sections created for the exhibit, we will navigate the
Italian landscape uncovering the complex relationships linking money to art.
