Program Description:
As part of the Implementation Grant from the Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the environment,
Illinois College will be sending up to four students during the summers of 2020-2021 to participate in
individual experiential learning programs in Japan.
The Language-Intensive Internship Program allows students to spend five weeks at the Ritsumeikan
intensive language program RSJP1 (http://en.ritsumei.ac.jp/admissions/short-term-
programs/japanese-language/) followed by a four-week internship with a focus on environmental
issues. This program is intended for students interested in significantly developing their Japanese
language abilities as well as learning about environmental issues in Japan. Students from any major
can apply.
The grant covers the following costs for each student: round-trip airfare to Japan, ground
transportation costs in Japan, tuition (includes housing) for the intensive language program, and
housing during the internship program. The RSJP runs from mid-May to mid-June. Students will
need to be able to leave IC before commencement. Participation in this program requires a
successful application to the RSJP1 program.
This program is open to students in any major interested in environmental issues and is intended for
students who have Japanese language experience.
The internship site will be selected based on the students’ interests and Japanese language abilities.
Additionally, our connections to faculty and staff in Japan will determine whether we can place a
student at any given site.
Students graduating in May 2020 may apply, but preference will be given to students returning to
Illinois College after participation in the program.
Students who participate in these programs are expected to apply through the Study Abroad Office
for permission to study abroad.
